I had to make psndolo slog through certain portions of this book — Eco is clearly brilliant, but needs to learn to keep a plot together. Diotallevi quips “Facies hermetica”, and from then on it’s an in-joke. I find it esoteric. Books that should be films.
The main plot, about Casaubon and Belbo, reminded me of a more erudite version of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code exo, which was the best part of the book although I did like Belbo’s reminiscences about being a boy during WW2. Want to Read Currently Reading Read.

The three become increasingly obsessed with The Plan and sometimes forget that it is just a game. Quite disappointing– Hearing and reading only good things about this book, I had really high expectations for it, thinking it would be better than Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code.
After the initial history of the Templars, Eco forgot to add any jokes to subsequent lectures, so it became a tedious Mannesplaynynge of Alchimie instead. Perhaps the book would fascinate a history and religion buff? Belbo tries to get help from De Angelis, but he has just transferred to Sardinia after an attempted car bombing, and refuses to get involved. The author lays fourth, for hundreds of pages, the confused world of the Western Hermetic tradition.
Then it stops being interesting, and peendolo e I think I’m being generous giving this book 2 stars. They enter randomly selected words from the Diabolicals’ manuscripts, logical operators “What follows is not true”, “If”, “Then”, etc.
Starting from Ardenti’s “secret manuscript”, they develop an intricate web of mystical connections. So much of it is very dry, and considering the “history” given is from conspiracy buffs, innaccurate. The top google results are quotations from the book, can anyone explain what Eco means by this?
