ISIS Creates Portuguese Propaganda Channel Ahead of Rio 2016 Olympics

On June 29, the Islamic State launched a Portuguese Telegram channel to broadcast its propaganda. Its creation comes 5-weeks before the Rio Olympic Games 2016 in Brazil, a Portuguese speaking country.

ISIS already has already stated on its channels that it plans to target the Olympic games. The Daily Mail reports that “Brazil’s anti-terror chief has admitted there is a ‘credible threat’” that ISIS will attempt an attack after the games begin on Friday, August 5.

Reuters reports that a “tweet threatening Brazil sent in November by Maxime Hauchard, a French national identified as an executioner in Islamic State propaganda videos, was genuine.”

The since deleted tweet simply read, “Brazil, you are our next target.”

ISIS has been especially active recently during the Islamic holy month of “Ramadan.” Ramadan is the time that Muslims believe that the Quran was revealed to Mohammed. It ends on July 6 with Eid al-Fitr. However, the Islamic State will still remain a threat.
