Lavish Reynolds: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

When a Falcon Heights, Minnesota police officer shot Lavish Reynolds’ boyfriend, Philando Castile, 32, to death through the window of her car, the Indianapolis, Indiana woman’s first instinct was to hit record on her cell phone. She captured the shooting on Facebook Live:

“Please, Jesus, no!” Reynolds shouts at one point. “… don’t let him be gone, Lord.” The boyfriend, identified as Philando Castile, later died. Falcon Heights, Minnesota, where the shooting occurred, is the home of the Minnesota State Fair and is located just 10 minutes from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

According to KTSP, the shooting started at p.m. Police were releasing very little information at the time.

In the video, the Castile’s shirt is drenched in blood as Lavish Reynolds implores God to save her boyfriend’s life.

So who is Lavish Reynolds? Here’s what you need to know:

1. Lavish Reynolds is a Hotel Worker Who Was Born in Chicago

According to her Facebook page, Lavish Reynolds works at the Embassy Suites hotel. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, and lives in Indianapolis, Indiana. However, in the video, she identifies the shot man as her boyfriend. She says that he works for St. Paul schools, and is not a gang member, and doesn’t have a criminal record.

2. Lavish Reynolds Is a Mother & Is Married

A child could be heard crying in the back of the Facebook Live video. “I told him to get his hand out; I told him not to reach for it,” says Reynolds, adding, “Oh my God, don’t tell me he’s dead, please don’t tell me my boyfriend just went like that.”

“I told him to get his hand off!” The officer says at one point. He tells Reynolds to keep her hands where they are.

Castile is heard moaning in the video, and his T-shirt is covered with blood.

3. Lavish Reynolds Was Detained in the Shooting Incident

In the Facebook Live video, Lavish Reynolds can be heard praying to God to spare her boyfriend. She says that Castile is “licensed to carry” and was “trying to get out his ID” and “he let the officer know he had a firearm, and he was reaching for his wallet, and the officer just shot him. … He just shot his arm off.”

“Please, officer, don’t tell me he’s gone; please don’t tell me that you did this to him. You shot four bullets into him, sir,” Reynolds implores, during the live, active situation.

“Get the female passenger out,” an officer shouts. Officers then arrest Reynolds and tell her she is being detained while “this is all sorted out.”

4. Police Had Not Yet Released an Official Account of the Shooting

According to the St. Anthony, Minnesota Police Department (which is in Falcon Heights), a press statement on the shooting was being written on the evening of July 6 and would be released shortly.

However, KTSP reported that police said they were aware of the Facebook Live video. CBS Minnesota reported that Castile’s mother had confirmed he had died and said he was a a cafeteria supervisor at St. Paul’s J.J. Hill Montessori School.

5. Social Media Blew Up Over the Shooting

In addition to Reynolds’ shooting, which was shared thousands of times on Facebook, another citizen captured a more distant video of the scene.

Other people on Facebook expressed concern over the latest police shooting.
