Philando Castile: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

In the video, Philando Castile, 32, bleeds through a white T-shirt as a police officer who just shot him (fatally as it turns out) points a gun through a car window at him. In the other seat, his girlfriend, Lavish Reynolds, hits the record button on Facebook Live and captures the scene.

Sadly, Philando Castile died shortly thereafter in a hospital:

Castile’s mother, Valerie, confirmed that he had died in a local hospital. Falcon Heights, Minnesota is the home of the Minnesota State Fair and is located about 10 minutes from Minneapolis/St. Paul. Police had yet to release an official statement, although they did tell Minnesota television at the scene that they were aware of the Facebook Live video.

According to WCCO television, Valerie Castile said Philando Castile worked as a cafeteria supervisor at J.J. Hill Montessori School in St. Paul. In the Facebook Live video, Castile’s girlfriend, Lavish Reynolds, says that he works for the St. Paul school system, is not a gang member, and doesn’t have a criminal record.

2. Lavish Reynolds Says in the Facebook Live Video That She is His Girlfriend

There is a child in the back seat who is heard crying as Philando Castile mains in the front seat.


3. Philando Castile Worked at Target & Went to the University of Minnesota

According to Facebook, Philando Castile worked at Target, went to the University of Minnesota, and graduated from Central High school in St. Paul, Minnesota.

4. Lavish Reynolds Says They Were Stopped For a Broken Taillight

Lavish Reynolds, who is from Indianapolis, Indiana, according to her Facebook page, can be heard telling Philando Castile: “Stay with me… We got pulled over for a busted taillight in the back.” Another man captured the scene from a more distant vantagepoint and posted the video on Twitter:

5. Philando Castile Had a Concealed Carry Permit

In her Facebook Live video, Lavish Reynolds said that Philando Castile had a concealed carry permit.

Reynolds adds that Castile is “licensed to carry” and was “trying to get out his ID” and “he let the officer know he had a firearm, and he was reaching for his wallet, and the officer just shot him. … He just shot his arm off.”
