Shane Lowry is embarking on his fourth U.S. Open. Having missed the cut in 2011 and again in 2014, Lowry contended in Chambers Bay last year where he finished tied-ninth.
The 29-year-old golfer hopes he can turn around a slow season by producing a memorable U.S. Open performance.
Lowry has had some impressive rounds this season, including ones at the Masters and the Players, however he hasn’t been able to establish consistency, finishing with poor 72 hole totals.
“I think this could be the week that could kick start my season,” Lowry said to reporters after a practice round at Oakmont.
A U.S. Open performance to remember could highlight a year that has already been eventful for Lowry, who tied the knot in April.
Just days after recording a hole-in-one during the final round of the Masters, Lowry married long-time girlfriend Wendy Honner.
Here are five fast facts to know about Lowry’s wife:
1. The Couple Married in NYC This April
According to the Irish examiner, Lowry married Wendy Honner in New York City, a place that holds special meaning for the couple.
Lowry told the Independent that they fell in love with New York after a visit there together last June.
Honner supported Lowry as he played into the final day of Augusta, and the duo got hitched on their way home.
Their wedding was simple, and began with a ceremony at City Hall.
“The guest list [was spiralling] and I get stressed very easily, so we decided the big white wedding at home was not what we wanted,” Lowry told the Independent.
“Wendy seen it online that an Irish couple did it last November, so she sent me the link, I’d a read through it and it was cool, so we decided to do it,” he said.
The couple took photos at iconic New York locations, including the Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park.
“It was really all very chilled,” Lowry said. “We woke up the next morning and were totally happy at what we were after doing. It was perfect for the two of us.”
2. Lowry Proposed in Dubai in 2014
Lowry got down on bended knee in Dubai at the end of 2014, after a fifth-place finish at the World Tour Championship. He chose the famous Atlantis Hotel overlooking Dubai’s Palm islands as the setting for the proposal.
After Honner said “yes,” Lowry tweeted: “Wendy and I would just like to thank everyone for their good wishes on our engagement. A great end to a fantastic year.”
Lowry showed his affection for his bride by having her name stamped on his wedges soon after their engagement.
“I am absolutely delighted. Wendy is a great girl and we are both looking to our future together,” he said at the time to reporters.
3. Honner Has Her Own Career, but Supports Lowry on Tour
Honner was at Augusta National this year caddying for her husband in the Masters Par 3 Contest.
She is a nurse in Ireland, but is very supportive of Lowry’s professional golf career. She often tweets out encouraging and congratulatory messages regarding her husband’s performance.
4. They Met During a ‘Random Night Out’
Lowry revealed to the Independent that he met Wendy during a “random night out” four years ago, and the two have been inseparable ever since.
In an interview with golf writer Brian Keogh, when asked about the greatest love of his life, he replied: “My girlfriend Wendy.”
5. They Are Active in Supporting Kidney Disease
Honner is vocal in her support of kidney disease awareness, and it is a cause close to her heart. Her sister, Melissa donated a kidney to their sister Alison.
